This proposed bill by Nevada Assemblymember Ruben D’Silva seeks to establish a commission to study the impact of slavery and ongoing racial discrimination in the state.
It would explore historical and systemic issues related to Black Americans, including the economic, political, educational, and social consequences of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and modern racial discrimination.
The findings of the commission would be presented to the legislature, possibly including recommendations for reparations or other forms of restitution for descendants of enslaved Africans.
This is part of a broader trend in several states exploring reparations or related initiatives. While California’s task force made reparations recommendations, the state has not yet moved forward with any payments.
Illinois and New York have passed similar laws, and Florida established a scholarship fund for descendants of victims of a 1923 massacre.
