On February 17, 2025, Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke addressed the state legislature, highlighting the importance of government action in solving Montana’s issues, acknowledging the imperfections of government, and emphasizing that no problem in the state is unsolvable.

Zinke advocated for bipartisan collaboration, particularly in addressing environmental and energy challenges. He pointed to the need to protect the environment while promoting energy production, including expanding natural gas and nuclear energy.

Zinke also discussed infrastructure needs, urging lawmakers to collaborate on improving projects such as aging bridges and affordable housing. Following Zinke, U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, stressed government’s duty to keep communities safe and spoke about early wins in Congress, including the Laken Riley Act and bills benefiting veterans and wildfire fighting.

Representative Troy Downing emphasized his commitment to rural businesses, food security, and support for farmers and ranchers. He also talked about leveraging emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.

Chairman Justin Gray Hawk Sr. of the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes spoke on the importance of Tribal consultation and expressed gratitude for the state’s efforts in addressing Native American issues, such as Medicaid expansion and water settlements.

Gray Hawk also reminded the legislature of the historical significance of the relationship between the state and Tribal nations, as depicted in a Charles M. Russell painting in the House chamber. His message called for continued cooperation and respect for treaty obligations.
