A Massachusetts judge has declared a mistrial in the widely followed murder case against Karen Read, who was accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe. The trial, which has garnered significant attention both locally and globally, will now proceed to a new trial.

Case Overview

Karen Read, 44, faced serious charges including second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter, and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.

Prosecutors alleged that after a night of drinking in January 2022, Read intentionally hit O’Keefe with her car, leading to his death from head injuries and hypothermia during a blizzard.

The case attracted interest from true-crime enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists who believed Read was being framed. During deliberations, the jury struggled to reach a unanimous verdict.

They informed Judge Beverly J. Cannone that they were “deeply divided” and unable to come to a consensus. Despite the judge’s attempts to guide them toward a verdict, the jury remained deadlocked, resulting in the mistrial.

Arguments from Both Sides

Read’s defense team argued that she did not kill O’Keefe. They claimed that after dropping him off at a late-night party, he was beaten by another officer and left outside in the snow.

Defense attorney Alan Jackson criticized the prosecution’s case, suggesting it was based on falsehoods and a cover-up. On the other hand, prosecutors maintained that Read had admitted to hitting O’Keefe shortly after his body was found. They argued that these early confessions were crucial to their case.

Public and Legal Reactions

Outside the courthouse, Read’s supporters celebrated the mistrial, while the prosecution vowed to retry the case. Daniel Medwed, a law professor at Northeastern University, noted that the retrial might face significant hurdles due to the polarized views on Read’s guilt or innocence.

The case has generated a strong public following, including the Free Karen Read movement, which has actively supported her. The movement has been fueled by claims of a law enforcement cover-up and has been highly visible throughout the trial.

Next Steps

Judge Cannone has scheduled a session for July 22 to discuss the future of the case. The prosecution plans to pursue another trial, while the defense is prepared to continue contesting the charges. As the case moves forward, it remains a highly charged and closely watched legal matter.
