KANSAS CITY, Mo. KCTV – Mayors from Missouri’s largest cities are urging Governor-elect Mike Kehoe to prioritize tackling youth violence and updating state gun laws.

On November 15, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, along with Springfield Mayor Ken McClure, Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe, and St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones, sent a letter to Kehoe requesting action.

The mayors proposed two key actions to make Missouri cities safer:
1. Update state law to mirror federal law by banning firearm possession for those under 18.
2. Create a better reporting system for weapons-related incidents in schools, including a public database to keep families informed.

Mayor Lucas emphasized the importance of collaboration between local governments and the state to reduce gun violence. We’ve made progress locally, but a united effort from all levels of government is needed to stop gun violence, he said.

The mayors are hopeful that Governor-elect Kehoe, set to take office on January 13, 2025, will consider their proposals and work together on public safety solutions.
