A couple from Missouri has been charged after trying to perform a circumcision on their child at home without any medical training.

The father, Tyler Wade Gibson, 35, used a utility tool to perform the procedure on November 27. He claimed he had done some research beforehand.

According to court documents, Tyler started by saying a blessing, then tried to sterilize the blade and set up pads to catch the blood.

However, things went terribly wrong. The child began bleeding heavily, and Tyler was shocked by how much blood there was.

Tyler’s wife, Bailey Alexus Gibson, 32, admitted to helping him, even though she was hesitant about the procedure. When the bleeding became too much to handle, they rushed the child to Lake Regional Hospital.

The child was later transferred to University Hospital, but the couple decided to leave after waiting for four hours, despite doctors advising them to stay due to the serious situation.

The hospital reported the incident to Social Services, who then contacted the police. Tyler was charged with two felonies—child abuse and practicing medicine without a license—which could result in up to 14 years in prison. Bailey was also charged with child abuse.

Tyler had his court appearance on December 3, and Bailey will go to court on January 28. In the aftermath, Social Services removed five other children from the couple’s home, and police were unable to find the blade Tyler claimed to have left in their bedroom.
