Three children left the Michigan Hall of Justice on Monday with new last names as the state Supreme Court marked Adoption Day.

Skye and Scarlett Jahlas were officially adopted by their stepfather, Ron Jahlas, who has been married to their mother, Mandy, for nearly 10 years.

“We’ve been a united family for years, but today makes it official—I’m now their legal father,” Ron shared.

Erin O’Brien, Oakland County’s chief of adoptions, emphasized the emotional and rewarding nature of adoption. “Every finalization is emotional. It’s a testament to the hard work that creates permanent homes and forever families,” she said.

Michigan has about 10,000 children in foster care waiting for adoption, according to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. Michigan Adoption Day is recognized on Nov. 18, with National Adoption Day following on Nov. 23.

Michigan Adoption Day is the best day of the year,” O’Brien added.

For Skye and Scarlett, Monday formalized what Ron has been to them for years—a loving, dependable father. “He’s smart, kind, funny, and always there for us,” said Skye.
