The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State is legendary in college football, with fans in each state often harboring intense animosity towards the other team. But beyond this fierce rivalry lies a question: which team holds the dubious honor of being the most despised in America? A recent Reddit poll sheds light on this contentious topic.
Surveying 5,000 college football enthusiasts, the poll revealed that Ohio State claims the title of the most hated team in the nation, securing 11.4% of the total vote. Michigan and Alabama closely trailed behind, tied at 9.2%.
In Michigan, the results were unequivocal: Ohio State emerged as the most hated team, commanding a significant 37.9% of the vote. Michigan followed behind at 23.4%, with Michigan State earning 7.8% of the vote. Conversely, in Ohio, it’s Michigan that bears the brunt of animosity, capturing 41.6% of the vote, while Ohio State trailed at 26.3%, and Michigan State at 5.3%.
Interestingly, Michigan failed to crack the top three most-hated teams in any of the SEC states surveyed, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. This despite coach Jim Harbaugh stirring controversy with his team’s activities during spring break.
In Illinois, Ohio State once again emerges as the most hated team, boasting 25.3% of the vote, with Michigan closely following at 20.9%.
While the results vary across states and regions, one fact remains clear: the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State transcends mere football games, elevating both teams to the status of contenders for the title of college football’s most hated.
The intensity of this rivalry extends far beyond the field, shaping perceptions and fueling passion among fans on both sides.
