The Maryland Senate race is shaping up to be much more competitive than Democrats anticipated.

Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic candidate and Prince George’s County Executive, faces a strong challenge from former Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican.

Despite Maryland’s historically Democratic lean, Hogan’s popularity and the tight polling have prompted the Democratic Party to heavily invest in the race, outspending Republicans nearly 6-to-1.

Key issues in the campaign include Alsobrooks’ relatively low recognition outside her county, as well as Hogan’s controversial record on abortion rights, which Democrats aim to exploit.

Hogan has attempted to position himself as pro-choice, but Democrats are framing him as inconsistent, citing his vetoes on key abortion-related legislation during his governorship.

The dynamics of the race are influenced by broader electoral trends, including the impact of President Biden’s substantial victory margin in 2020 and the ongoing significance of abortion rights as a motivating factor for voters.

With significant spending from both sides expected in the coming weeks, Maryland’s Senate race is likely to remain a focal point as it heads toward November.
