Mohamed Bashir Aden, who was seriously injured in the mass shooting in Minneapolis on May 30, has died from his injuries, bringing the death toll of this tragic event to four.
Aden, 36, was shot multiple times inside an apartment building on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue. After fighting for his life at Hennepin Healthcare, he passed away on Friday, as confirmed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.
The violent incident on May 30 began with a shooting that quickly escalated into chaos. During the turmoil, Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell was fatally shot while trying to help a victim. Mitchell, who leaves behind his fiancée and four children, was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. The suspect, Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, was killed in a shootout with police shortly after.
In the same building where Aden was found, another individual was discovered dead. Additionally, the confrontation resulted in injuries to three others: another police officer, a firefighter, and a civilian.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident. It’s still unclear exactly where Aden was when he was shot or who was responsible for his injuries. Mohamed, the primary suspect in this incident, had a troubled past. He was prohibited from carrying a firearm and had an active arrest warrant at the time of the shooting.
As the community comes to terms with the loss, Officer Mitchell will be honored at a public memorial service in Maple Grove on Tuesday. The service will provide an opportunity for the community to mourn and remember the lives lost during this tragic event.
