A racist letter is being spread around coastal Oregon, urging people to round up brown people,” according to local officials. The letter has been circulating in Lincoln County, encouraging residents to report people of color, especially those they suspect may be undocumented.

The letter, titled The Brown Round Up, Part One, includes instructions like: If you see a bunch of brown folks getting in a car, write down the plate number.

It claims that in January 2025, the U.S. will begin the largest roundup of brown illegals in history.

The letter was found in the mailboxes of Lincoln County Sheriff Curtis Landers and Lincoln City Mayor Susan Wahlke.

The sheriff expressed concern about the letter, saying it could cause harm and make people feel unsafe, worrying that others might be writing down their license plate numbers for no reason.

The sheriff’s office reminded the community that Oregon law usually prohibits questioning or collecting someone’s immigration status, with very few exceptions.

Both Landers and Wahlke received the letter after hearing that other local leaders had also gotten it. The sheriff’s office has contacted the FBI and confirmed that the letter seems to be limited to Lincoln County.

Lincoln County is located about 130 miles southwest of Portland.
