Lake Charles, LA – A new multimillion-dollar Louisiana National Guard Readiness Center has officially opened its doors on Sen. J. Bennett Johnston Ave, marking a significant enhancement in facilities for local soldiers.

Officials gathered on Friday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Lake Charles Readiness Center.

The facility, announced in December 2020 after severe hurricane damage to previous armories, broke ground in June 2022 and has been constructed at a cost of $29 million.

It serves as the headquarters for the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion of the 156th Infantry Regiment, and Company H of the 199th Brigade Support Battalion, providing a dedicated space for about 170 soldiers to train and operate.

The new readiness center spans 38,232 square feet, complemented by a 12,159-square-foot maintenance training facility.

Designed with a campus-like feel, the readiness center features distinct areas for administration and training, including classrooms, an auditorium, a kitchen, and locker rooms, fostering collaboration among soldiers.

Maj. Gen. Thomas Friloux, adjutant general of Louisiana, praised the building, calling it “truly spectacular.” He expressed confidence that the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion would appreciate the facility for many years to come.

The center also boasts environmentally friendly features, meeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED standards, including a solar array system that powers part of the building.

The total cost of the project reached $29,459,812, funded by the National Guard, with Chennault International Airport maintaining ownership of the grounds.

Kevin Melton, Executive Director of Chennault, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project, emphasizing the partnership built on military history, mutual trust, respect, and intention.

Melton stated, I look forward to those so that we can continue to collaborate and synergize our efforts for the common good and ultimately be sure to protect what matters.

We are a team. We are a force that drives excellence and demands results without fail.

The opening of the Lake Charles Readiness Center not only enhances the operational capabilities of the Louisiana National Guard but also symbolizes a commitment to supporting the soldiers who serve the state and nation.
