As Pennsylvania gears up for its primary election, all eyes are on the state’s legislative races, with several contests attracting attention due to crowded ballots, challenged incumbents, and the potential for party shifts. While all 203 state House seats and half of its Senate seats are up for grabs, only a handful of races in each chamber are hotly contested.

Among the races to watch in today’s primary election are:

10th Legislative District:

State Rep. Amen Brown faces two challengers in the Democratic primary after an unsuccessful campaign for Philadelphia mayor in 2023. Community activists Sadja Blackwell and Cass Green are vying against Brown, with Green seeking to capitalize on concerns raised by Brown’s mayoral bid.

32nd Legislative District:

Rep. Joe McAndrew, chosen in a 2023 special election, is challenged by Penn Hills Mayor Pauline Calabrese, who advocates for direct voter input in selecting representatives.

34th Legislative District:

Rep. Abigail Salisbury, appointed in the same 2023 special elections, faces a challenge from Wilkinsburg School Board Director Ashley Comans, who emphasizes equitable school funding and healthcare advocacy.

100th Legislative District:

House Minority Leader Bryan Cutler faces a challenge from conservative newcomer Dave Nissley, prioritizing school choice and regulatory reform.

102nd Legislative District:

Rep. Russ Diamond faces a challenge from Rachel Moyer, backed by State Sen. Doug Mastriano, with a focus on election integrity and conservative principles.

103rd Legislative District:

State Rep. Patty Kim’s bid for the state Senate sets the stage for a five-way race among Democrats, including Tina Nixon, Mercedes Evans, Nathan Davidson, Jesse Monoski, and Laura Harding.

172nd Legislative District:

Rep. Kevin Boyle faces a challenge from Sean Dougherty amid personal and legal challenges, with Dougherty receiving significant support from Democratic leaders.

181st Legislative District:

Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, concurrently running for state auditor general, defends his House seat against Lewis Nash Sr. and NaDerah Griffin, each with their priorities and backgrounds.

15th Senate District:

Rep. Patty Kim seeks the Democratic nomination against Harrisburg pastor Alvin Q. Taylor, with significant implications for the Senate’s partisan balance.

45th Senate District:

Sen. Jim Brewster’s impending retirement triggers contested primaries on both Democratic and Republican ballots, with candidates such as Rep. Nick Pisciottano, Makenzie White, Jennifer Dintini, and Kami Stulginskas in the race.

49th Senate District:

Democrats vie to reclaim the seat from Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Laughlin, with candidates including Jim Wertz and Selena King positioning for a chance to challenge Laughlin in November.

As Pennsylvania’s primary unfolds, these races will shape the political landscape, offering voters a glimpse into the state’s future leadership.
