PADUCAH, Ky. — On Monday, the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure revoked Dr. Anand P. Lalaji’s medical license. Dr. Lalaji, a radiologist from Georgia, was accused of failing to diagnose a brain tumor while working at Mercy Health Lourdes in Paducah, Kentucky.

Dr. Lalaji, who was first licensed in Kentucky in 2008, used X-rays and CT scans to diagnose patients. In November 2023, the hospital suspended him after discovering he misread images and missed diagnoses in eight cases. This led to an investigation by the medical board.

The board’s case report showed that Dr. Lalaji failed to identify a brain tumor and a perirectal abscess. He did not attend a mandatory hearing, despite being warned that his absence could lead to a default ruling. As a result, the board confirmed the allegations and revoked his license.

Dr. Lalaji can apply for reinstatement in two years if he pays $7,056 to cover the board’s costs.

Dr. Lalaji’s medical license is still valid in Georgia, but it is under review or suspended by eight other states. His practice, The Radiology Group, reached a $3.1 million settlement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in March for fraudulent billing practices. The settlement revealed that Dr. Lalaji’s company was accused of using unqualified contractors from India to handle radiology reports and not ensuring proper review of these reports.

The Radiology Group stated it has since improved its hiring practices and compliance measures to avoid future issues. The company did not need to adopt additional oversight measures as part of the settlement.
