Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, along with mayors from Springfield, Columbia, and St. Louis, sent a letter to Governor-elect Mike Kehoe on Friday, urging him to assist in combating crime in Missouri.

The letter emphasizes that public safety is a top priority for all the mayors, as well as for Kehoe.

In the letter, the mayors expressed their desire to start a conversation with the governor-elect about improving public safety in their cities.

Mayor Lucas spoke with KSHB 41 about the need for more state support, including increased funding and collaboration with state agencies like the Highway Patrol, similar to efforts seen in California to combat crime in Oakland.

The mayors proposed two main ideas to enhance safety, particularly for young people. One suggestion is to align state law with federal regulations by prohibiting minors under 18 from possessing handguns.

The other proposal involves improving the reporting system for weapon-related incidents at schools, including a public database accessible to parents.

The letter highlights recent reports of threats at schools across Missouri, which have led to lockdowns and caused anxiety among students and families.

The mayors argue that these incidents reflect a concerning trend that requires immediate attention to better protect children.
