The Iowa Libraries Adventure Pass program will pause temporarily in 2025 due to software problems, according to Karalee Kerr, the assistant director at Grimes Library.
Why it matters: This program allows Des Moines metro residents to get free passes from their local libraries to visit popular attractions like the Blank Park Zoo, Science Center of Iowa, and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.
Around 80 libraries across the state participate in the program.
How it started: The program began in 2017, thanks to Grimes Library Director Cheryl Heid. It quickly grew as other libraries wanted to join. Grimes Library handled the technical side to avoid individual libraries paying for software.
What’s happening now: The company that hosted the software, Plymouth Rocket, is shutting down on December 31. Kerr is now looking for other companies to help relaunch the program, but the timing is uncertain.
The bottom line: If you have an Adventure Pass for 2025, make sure to print it out, as that will be the only way to use it after the end of the year, Kerr says.
