With more people shopping online, especially around the holidays, Indiana State Police are warning about porch pirates — thieves who steal packages from people’s doorsteps.

These thieves usually strike when the homeowner is away, making it hard to catch them in the act. To avoid this, police suggest not having packages delivered when you’re not home, such as when you’re at work. A good way to protect your packages is to require a signature before they’re left at your door.

According to Sgt. Matt Ames from Indiana State Police, apartments are especially vulnerable to porch piracy. At apartments, packages are often left out in the open, and people going in and out might take them, he said.

He advises tracking your package online and, if you can’t be home, ask a neighbor or family member to pick it up for you.

Ames also recommends installing security cameras, which can help protect your packages during the holiday season.
