The 2024 election cycle has seen significant shifts in North Carolina’s congressional landscape, largely driven by redistricting efforts that benefited Republicans.

The state was awarded an additional congressional seat due to population growth following the 2020 census, and Republicans, led by figures like Tim Moore, the state’s speaker of the House, capitalized on redrawn maps to flip three districts from Democrat to Republican.

This included the successful campaigns of Brad Knott, Addison McDowell, and Tim Moore himself.

McDowell, who won the 6th District, had personal motivations tied to his brother’s fentanyl overdose and focused on securing the southern border. Knott, a former federal prosecutor, focused on crime and illegal immigration to win in the 13th District.

Moore, who was already a prominent state politician, won in the 14th District after Rep. Jeff Jackson chose to run for North Carolina Attorney General instead.

This Republican momentum in North Carolina was not isolated, as it was accompanied by similar shifts elsewhere, such as in New York, where Democrats successfully flipped two competitive seats, including one previously held by Republican Marcus Molinaro.

This shift highlights the complex nature of the 2024 election cycle, with redistricting playing a significant role in reshaping political dynamics across the country.
