The House Ethics Committee has cleared West Virginia Congressman Alex Mooney of any wrongdoing related to the personal use of campaign funds.

The investigation, which stemmed from allegations referred by the Office of Congressional Ethics OCE, focused on over $40,000 in expenses, including fast food and travel purchases between 2017 and 2021.

The committee’s announcement follows a unanimous decision to close the matter, affirming that no evidence was found to suggest intentional misuse of funds for personal benefit.

Mooney, who has fully cooperated with the investigation, expressed relief, stating that the allegations were politically motivated. He criticized the OCE, which was created in 2019 under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and maintained that the accusations were baseless.

The Ethics Committee also noted that while there were instances of non-compliance with standards on campaign fund usage, no deliberate misuse for personal gain was identified.

Mooney, who will leave office at the end of this week after serving 10 years in the U.S. House, ran for the U.S. Senate this year but was defeated in the May primary by Governor Jim Justice.

The Ethics Committee also indicated that further guidance on campaign fund use will be provided to members moving forward.
