Harvey Weinstein, the former movie mogul, has been hospitalized in New York City for medical tests following his recent return from an upstate prison. Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, confirmed on Saturday that Weinstein was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan upon his arrival in the city.
According to Aidala, Weinstein’s health requires significant attention, describing him as facing various physical challenges. Aidala mentioned that Weinstein is undergoing extensive testing at Bellevue, although specific details about his condition were not provided by the hospital.
Weinstein’s return to New York City follows an appeals court ruling that overturned his 2020 rape conviction and ordered a retrial. The court concluded that jurors were exposed to evidence unrelated to the charges against Weinstein during his trial.
Despite the overturned conviction, prosecutors have stated their intention to retry Weinstein on charges related to sexual assault allegations. Weinstein, who is currently in custody at Bellevue Hospital, was previously convicted of rape in Los Angeles in 2022 and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Weinstein’s health has been a concern for some time, with reports of cardiac issues, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems. Despite these physical ailments, Aidala affirmed that Weinstein remains mentally sharp.
Aidala criticized Weinstein’s treatment during his transfer, alleging that he was denied basic necessities such as water and food. However, state corrections spokesperson Thomas Mailey declined to comment on Aidala’s remarks.
Weinstein’s condition is being closely monitored at Bellevue Hospital, where doctors are conducting comprehensive tests. Aidala is scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday and plans to advocate for a retrial after Labor Day during Weinstein’s court appearance in Manhattan on Wednesday.
