Manassas – Gwen Walz, the First Lady of Minnesota and wife of Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate Tim Walz, criticized Republican vice presidential nominee Senator JD Vance of Ohio for his comments about family dynamics during her first solo campaign event in Virginia on Friday.
JD Vance recently expressed concern about teachers who don’t have biological children. Tim and I were teachers who faced infertility issues and only started our family after undergoing fertility treatments, Walz said at the Educators for Harris-Walz event.
This issue is personal for me and for many Americans. We don’t appreciate JD Vance telling us how or when to start our families, she added.
Walz used her teacher’s voice to address Vance directly: Mr. Vance, how about you mind your own business, eliciting cheers and claps from the educators present, who echoed her words: Mr. Vance, how about you mind your own business.
Walz’s comments came in response to Vance’s accusation that his Democratic opponent lied about using in vitro fertilization IVF for their children, Hope, 23, and Gus, 17. Vance’s claim followed a Glamour magazine article from August 19, which indicated that conception involved intrauterine insemination IUI rather than IVF.
Walz described to Glamour how a neighbor, a nurse, assisted her with the IUI process, including administering necessary shots.
In her speeches, Harris has criticized former President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion and labeled Republicans as a threat to women’s rights, including access to birth control, abortion medication, and fertility treatments.
On Thursday, Trump announced he would support government or insurance coverage for IVF treatments if elected, a move likely aimed at appealing to women and suburban voters. He strongly supports ensuring women have access to the care they need to create healthy families, including widespread access to IVF, birth control, and contraception, said Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt in a statement.
