Starting October 1, Rhode Islanders needing assistance with winter heating bills can apply for help through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program LIHEAP. Governor Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Department of Human Services DHS announced that the state expects to receive $26 million in federal grants for the upcoming heating season.
These grants can provide up to $1,148 per household and will be distributed as one-time payments directly to utility providers on behalf of qualified applicants. The aim is to ensure that low-income families and individuals can stay warm during the colder months.
LIHEAP is a vital resource for families at risk of losing heat this winter, said Governor McKee. I urge anyone who believes they qualify to apply starting October 1.
DHS Director Kimberly Merolla-Brito added, These heating grants will provide much-needed financial relief for families as the temperatures drop.
Households are encouraged to apply early, as funding is limited. Applications will be accepted until May 1, 2025, or until the funds are exhausted. Grant amounts vary based on income, with awards ranging from $64 to $1,148.
For the first time, applicants can submit their forms entirely online, making the process quicker and easier. In-person assistance is also available through the state’s Community Action Agencies.
LIHEAP is funded annually by the federal government and administered by the DHS in collaboration with local agencies. Last year, thousands of Rhode Island households received essential support through this program, and the state is preparing to continue this support this winter.
For more information on how to apply, residents can visit the DHS website or contact their local Community Action Agency.
