Colorado Republicans voted to remove their GOP Party Chair, Dave Williams, with a vote of 161.66 to 12 on Saturday.
Earlier, over 100 Republican leaders in the state had signed a petition to oust Williams from his role.
State Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer announced the decision on Twitter, stating, We will be getting a new chair of the State GOP!
The decision follows Williams’ controversial email attacking gay pride month and calling the LGBTQ community godless groomers. He also suggested burning pride flags on social media.
This wasn’t the first time Williams, who represents El Paso County, faced criticism, but it was the final straw for many Republicans.
Since becoming GOP chair, Williams has clashed with fellow Republicans, violated party rules by interfering in primaries, and used party resources for his own congressional campaign.
Williams dismissed those who signed the petition as weak establishment Republicans and said he wouldn’t apologize, even if it meant losing his position.
He lost his primary race for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District to Jeff Crank in June.
Kirkmeyer criticized Williams’ leadership, saying, Instead of focusing on what unites us, the State GOP under Dave Williams has been divided by hateful narratives. It’s time for him to go.
Williams and the Colorado GOP did not respond to requests for comment on Saturday.
