George Santos, a former congressman, has decided to halt his campaign for a comeback in New York’s 1st Congressional District. His main reason for this decision is his concern that running against incumbent Republican Rep.

Nick LaLota could potentially split the Republican vote and benefit the Democratic Party in the November elections. In his statement, Santos, who recently changed his party affiliation from Republican to independent, made it clear that his decision was not driven by a desire for revenge against LaLota.

Despite their differences, Santos expressed a strong wish to avoid unintentionally helping the Democrats by dividing the Republican vote. LaLota has previously criticized Santos, calling him an “embarrassment” and questioning his conduct. However, LaLota also stated that he would take Santos’ challenge seriously.

Santos was expelled from the House in December following a campaign led in part by LaLota. He is currently facing charges, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

During his time in office, Santos faced scrutiny over inconsistencies in his background. While he admitted to some inaccuracies, he argued that they were minor embellishments.

Despite ending his current bid for political office, Santos hinted that this might not be the end of his political career. His digital content creator account on Cameo, where he sells personalized videos, remains active.

“I have decided to end my pursuit of this race for now,” Santos said in his statement. “The future is full of possibilities, and I am prepared to step up and fight for my country whenever the opportunity arises.

I will continue to engage in discussions on public policy and contribute in any way I can… This is not a goodbye, but rather a see you later.”
