Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, a Republican, sharply criticized his own party and its support for former President Donald Trump during a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Duncan called Trump a direct threat to democracy and said his actions in trying to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results should disqualify him from ever being president again.
Duncan, who has often spoken out against Trump, said Republicans need to be honest with themselves. He argued that the party is no longer civil or conservative, but instead “chaotic and crazy.” He urged Republicans to move on from Trump.
Duncan, who is now a political commentator for CNN, compared the GOP to a cult and said many Republicans and independents are tired of defending Trump. While he doesn’t agree with all of Vice President Kamala Harris’ policies, Duncan praised her leadership qualities and called her a strong potential leader.
He urged his Republican friends to consider voting for Harris in 2024, saying that supporting her would be an act of patriotism, not a switch to the Democratic Party. His remarks were met with a USA chant from the crowd.
