SEYMOUR, Conn. WTNH — Homeowners in southwestern Connecticut are frustrated because their insurance isn’t covering the damage from last week’s flash flooding.

Emily Brisch said her Seymour home is uninhabitable after five feet of water flooded it. She tried to file a claim with her insurance company, but it was denied. The insurance company told us they wouldn’t cover anything because it was caused by a flood, Brisch said.

Dorothy Pierce, from Southbury, is also struggling. She’s been paying for homeowner’s insurance but feels it hasn’t protected her home. It’s been physically and emotionally exhausting,” Pierce said.

Connecticut is starting a micro-grant program for small businesses affected by the flooding, but homeowners are still looking for help and answers.

Both Brisch and Pierce weren’t required to have flood insurance because they don’t live in designated flood zones. Gerard O’Sullivan from the Connecticut Insurance Department said this flood is a rare event, affecting areas outside of typical flood zones.

O’Sullivan advised homeowners to understand their insurance coverage, noting that standard homeowner’s policies don’t cover floods. He suggested contacting insurance companies for flood insurance quotes and reporting damage to local emergency management offices.
