The candidate showdown held at Greater Bethel AME Church in Nashville on Sunday night provided an opportunity for challengers to Middle Tennessee’s four congressional seats to discuss critical issues facing the state. Hosted by Nashville Organized for Action and Hope NOAH, the forum featured five candidates — four Democrats and one independent — but no Republican incumbents.

The candidates addressed topics including health care, gun violence, voting rights, education, and the environment before an audience of over 130 people.

Notably, empty chairs were placed on stage with the names of Republican incumbents who did not attend.

All five candidates supported stronger gun regulations, with ideas ranging from closing gun law loopholes to enhancing mental health screenings. Maryam Abolfazli, Democratic candidate for Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, emphasized the importance of protecting children from the trauma of gun violence.

On reproductive health, the candidates advocated for legislation to safeguard access to abortion and other health care services.

They also voiced support for expanding Medicaid and passing the Momnibus Act to improve maternal health outcomes.

In addressing voting rights, candidates strongly supported the Freedom to Vote Act, highlighting Tennessee’s reputation for voter suppression. Victoria Broderick, Democratic candidate for the 4th District, criticized the state for its low voter participation rates and restrictive voting policies.

Megan Barry, running in the 7th District, along with others, expressed concerns about Project 2025, a conservative agenda that could undermine environmental protections and federal agencies.

While attendees appreciated the thoughtful policy discussions, some were disappointed that Republican incumbents chose not to participate, interpreting their absence as a missed opportunity for unity and dialogue.
