This story highlights the unexpected baby boom in East Tennessee, believed to be a ripple effect of the January 2024 snowstorm.

The icy conditions that locked people indoors may have contributed to the spike in births nine months later.

Tennova North Medical Center set a record for deliveries, with 103 newborns in September, almost double the number compared to September 2023. Blount Memorial Hospital is also expecting a surge, with up to 70 births in October.

Medical staff, including Dr. Jeanette Toney and Dr. Leonard Brabson, are working hard despite the pressure, ensuring each newborn is well cared for.

According to Stacy Wood, Director of Women’s Services, colder months usually bring higher birth rates, but the snowstorm created an extraordinary baby boom across the region.
