President-elect Donald Trump praised Billy Long, a former Republican Congressman, as the new leader of the IRS. Trump called Long a people person and said taxpayers would “love” his leadership.
Long, who served Missouri’s 7th Congressional District from 2011 to 2023, has a background in business and politics.
Trump highlighted Long’s 32 years of experience in real estate and as a top auctioneer, as well as his 12 years in Congress. Trump noted that Long felt it was important to have a representative who had experience running a business.
After leaving Congress, Long worked as a business and tax advisor, helping small businesses navigate IRS rules. Trump described Long as a hard worker, respected by everyone, especially in Congress.
Trump also mentioned Long’s “people person” qualities, stating that both taxpayers and IRS employees would enjoy working with him. He added that Long is well-liked by both Republicans and Democrats.
In a lighthearted moment, Trump remembered when Long pretended to auction off the Stanley Cup at a 2019 White House event. Trump also praised Long at a 2022 rally in Nebraska, calling him a great guy, though Long lost a Senate race that year.
Shortly after announcing Long’s nomination, a video showed Long jokingly auctioning off a phone at a protest in 2018.
