Authorities in Washington state have issued an Amber Alert for 1-year-old Roman Huizar after a former police officer, Elias Huizar, allegedly killed two women – his wife and ex-girlfriend – and kidnapped the infant.

The alert, issued by the Washington State Patrol on behalf of the West Richland Police Department, reported the baby missing. Roman Huizar is believed to be traveling with his relative, 39-year-old Elias Huizar, who is wanted on two homicide charges and is considered armed and dangerous.

The city of West Richland, where the incident occurred, is located in Benton County, approximately 35 miles north of the Oregon state line.

Elias Huizar, the child’s father, is wanted on two homicide charges, according to police announcements made on Monday.

Details provided by law enforcement indicate that Huizar killed his ex-girlfriend outside William Wiley Elementary School in West Richland before fleeing the scene. Subsequently, a second woman’s body was discovered at his residence during a search warrant execution, although police have not disclosed further information about the victims’ deaths.

As of Tuesday, the victims’ identities had not been released, and USA TODAY reached out to West Richland police for additional details.

In a disturbing turn of events, Elias Huizar, a former police officer with the Yakima Police Department, was spotted in Portland, Oregon, possibly driving a black sedan overnight, according to West Richland police. The agency emphasized that all available resources are being deployed to follow up on this lead.

Huizar had served with the Yakima Police Department since 2013 before resigning in February 2022, as confirmed by the agency’s spokesperson Yvette Inzunza. Yakima, the city where Huizar served, is located approximately 70 miles northwest of West Richland.

Described as armed and dangerous, Huizar is considered likely to commit further violent crimes, and there is a possibility that he may be heading to Mexico, investigators warned.

The suspect was last seen driving a 2009 silver Toyota Corolla with the license plate CBZ-745. He is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a black hat, black long-sleeve shirt, light blue jeans, and black shoes.

Meanwhile, Roman Huizar, the missing baby, stands at 2 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 25 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

Law enforcement urges anyone who spots the suspect or the baby to call 911 immediately.
