RICHMOND, Va. —
Qualifying for the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway brought some surprises on Saturday evening.
Local favorite Denny Hamlin, who won here last spring, secured the pole position with a best time of 22.850 seconds.
Though Hamlin was only the fifth fastest in the group stage, he earned a front-row spot in the final round, just beating Chase Elliot, who had a time of 22.861 seconds.
Other top drivers, Bubba Wallace and Martin Truex Jr., also finished in the top 10, making it past the elimination phase. Wallace finished 6th with a time of 22.961 seconds, while Truex came in 3rd with a time of 22.916 seconds.
However, Kyle Larson, another strong contender, didn’t make it to the second round, finishing near the bottom in his group.
The race will start at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, and like last spring, it will take place under the lights
