In a recent debate, Republican congressional candidate Lily Tang Williams confronted her Democratic opponent, Maggie Goodlander, over her wealth and alleged disconnect from everyday citizens.
Goodlander had criticized Williams for supporting policies that benefit the wealthy and large corporations, advocating instead for tax cuts aimed at the middle class.
In her rebuttal, Williams highlighted Goodlander’s multimillionaire status, questioning her ability to relate to the struggles of regular people. Williams noted, You are wealthy. You’re worth $20 million to $30 million. How do you know about regular people’s suffering Do you go shopping? Go to Walmart Buy food She further accused Goodlander of pretending to be a renter while benefiting from financial support from Washington insiders.
Both candidates are indeed millionaires, with financial disclosures indicating Goodlander’s net worth ranges from $9.9 million to $39 million, primarily held in a trust fund. In contrast, Williams is estimated to be worth between $3.8 million and $8.6 million.
Goodlander, who is married to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, expressed her commitment to understanding and advocating for the needs of middle-class families, asserting her intention to own property in the district if elected.
As they vie for the open seat in New Hampshire’s 2nd District, recent polling indicates Goodlander holds an eight-point lead ahead of the upcoming election. Williams, a Chinese immigrant and U.S. citizen since 1994, previously ran as a Libertarian in Colorado.
