Deadly Foot Pursuit: Burglary Suspect Killed, Deputy Wounded in SoCal

California (Thechieftainspear) – A suspected vehicle burglar was fatally shot, and a deputy sustained minor injuries following a late-night confrontation in Needles, California, authorities reported.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated that the incident unfolded around 8:03 p.m. on Friday when a homeowner on Walnut Street caught an individual breaking into his vehicle. As the suspect was confronted, he fled on foot.

Foot Chase Turns Deadly

Deputies responding to the burglary report spotted the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Michael Ray Richard II of Phoenix, Arizona, walking nearby. As they attempted to detain him, Richard pulled away and ran, prompting a foot pursuit.

While fleeing, Richard reportedly jumped over fences before circling back to the patrol vehicles, where he retrieved a bag he had initially been carrying. Deputies soon discovered that he was armed.

Gunfire Exchanged

According to investigators, as deputies tried to subdue Richard, he brandished a firearm and fired. In response, law enforcement returned fire, striking him. Richard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later searched his bag and recovered a second firearm. The injured deputy sustained minor wounds but is expected to recover.

Investigation Ongoing
