As the West Virginia and Maryland state primaries approach, the political landscape is marked by the presence of two individuals whose connections to the events of January 6, 2021, couldn’t be more different.

Derrick Evans, once a West Virginia lawmaker, finds himself back in the political fray after being part of the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol. Despite facing consequences for his actions, Evans is now pursuing a permanent seat in Congress.

On the flip side stands Police Officer Harry Dunn, who stood vigilant at the Capitol that tumultuous day, witnessing firsthand the bedlam and brutality unleashed by the rioters. Troubled by the events and the subsequent lack of accountability, Dunn has thrown his hat into the ring for a House seat in Maryland.

Their candidacies highlight the divergent interpretations of the Capitol attack and its aftermath. While Evans seeks redemption in the political arena, Dunn is driven by a commitment to bring accountability and reform to Congress.

The chaos of January 6 saw rioters wreaking havoc throughout the Capitol, wielding weapons and inflicting injuries on over 100 police officers. Tragically, the violence resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including a female rioter shot by police.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, the outcome of these primaries will serve as a barometer of how public perceptions regarding the Capitol riot and its reverberations have shifted over time.
