SACRAMENTO – Many voters and politicians in California are surprised by Kamala Harris’ choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate.

Sacramento resident Roland Allred said, “I thought she might choose someone from a battleground state.”

California’s reaction to Walz’s selection has been mixed.

Mikelynn Leverte from the Bay Area commented, “Wow, he seems very far left.”

James Gallagher, the Republican Leader of the California Assembly, expressed his surprise and doubts about Walz’s appeal to average Americans. “My first thought was, ‘Who is this guy?’” Gallagher said. “The more I learn about him, the more I see how far left this pick is.”

On the other hand, Democratic Representative Ami Bera, who has worked with Walz, sees things differently. “As people get to know him, they’ll see that he represents many in the Midwest who are struggling and seeking a better life,” Bera said.

Walz, a Midwesterner known for his progressive stances on issues like abortion rights, stricter gun laws, and police reform, has received a range of reactions.

Sacramento resident Paula Clark said, “I’m not especially happy about it. I’m not thrilled with her choice either.”

Political analysts suggest that Walz might appeal to older white male voters who oppose Donald Trump. “He’s already criticized Trump,” Bera noted.

Gallagher, however, believes the choice won’t affect the Republican campaign. “We’ll focus on issues like lowering grocery and electricity prices,” Gallagher said.

Though Walz’s candidacy is unexpected, it remains to be seen if it will sway undecided voters. Leverte added, “It’s important to research the candidates to understand their positions, especially since our country is facing significant challenges.”
