SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A software glitch in a California lottery game is leading officials to increase the prize pool by hundreds of thousands of dollars in the coming days, potentially resulting in larger jackpots.
On Monday, the California Lottery announced they recently found a bug affecting machines that sell Daily Derby tickets.
In the Daily Derby game, players pick two sets of three numbers: the first set represents the horses finishing in first, second, and third places, and the second set represents the winning race time.
The error, which only impacted two specific types of ticket machines, caused “quick pick” tickets to produce numbers in ascending order and, in some cases, affected race time number selections as well. The issue was fixed within 24 hours, and no other state lottery games were impacted.
As a result of the error, the California Lottery will increase the Daily Derby prize by $100,000 daily for 12 days starting Tuesday. This means that winners at any level will have the chance to win larger prizes. If the grand prize is not claimed during the promotion, the extra money will roll over until someone wins the top prize.
