SEATTLE — The union representing engineers at Boeing announced on Friday that more of its members will be laid off.

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) said 222 members were given layoff notices this week, including 184 engineers and 38 technical workers. SPEEA represents 17,000 employees at Boeing locations in Washington, Oregon, California, and Utah, but did not specify how many of the layoffs are in Washington state.

The union is reviewing the situation to make sure Boeing followed the correct procedure for layoffs, as outlined in their contracts. These layoffs follow a previous round in November, which affected 438 SPEEA members.

Earlier this fall, Boeing announced plans to cut 10% of its workforce as the company faces financial struggles related to the Boeing 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, a blowout incident on an Alaska Airlines flight earlier this year, and a machinists strike this fall. The strike is estimated to have cost Boeing over $1 billion.

Boeing has said the strike could cost the company over $1 billion a month, according to an October report by S&P Global.

Employees laid off in November are expected to have their last day on January 17, 2025. SPEEA did not mention the last day for workers who received notices this week.

After the November layoffs, Boeing reported to the Washington Employment Security Department that it laid off 2,199 workers in Washington state.
