Bob Ferguson, Washington’s governor-elect, has chosen Casey Sixkiller to lead the state’s Department of Ecology starting January 15, 2025. Sixkiller, who currently works as the Environmental Protection Agency EPA Regional Administrator for the Pacific Northwest, will focus on protecting the state’s clean air and water while promoting clean energy jobs.

Casey’s experience in managing big organizations, standing up for Tribal rights, and protecting natural resources makes him perfect for this role, Ferguson said. His ability to solve tough problems will help move Washington forward.

Sixkiller, a member of the Cherokee Nation, has worked on major national initiatives like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. These programs aim to improve water systems and tackle climate change.

“I’m honored to take on this role, Sixkiller said. I’m excited to work with the Department of Ecology to protect our environment and support sustainable practices for the benefit of communities and ecosystems across the state.

Laura Watson, the current Ecology Director, will step into a new role as Chief Deputy Attorney General under the incoming Attorney General, Nick Brown.
