Michigan’s top prosecutors are intensifying efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking and its complexities. Attorney General Dana Nessel hosted a discussion to mark National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, emphasizing that human trafficking often goes unnoticed.

Assistant Attorney General Melissa Palepu likened trafficking cases to an iceberg: “The bulk of what is out there is underneath the surface.” Nessel highlighted the importance of strong legal frameworks, noting challenges in prosecuting traffickers.

The Reality of Trafficking:
Traffickers exploit victims through trust, coercion, and manipulation. While labor trafficking often involves employers, family members can also be perpetrators. This dynamic complicates detection and intervention.

Local Action:
The new Oakland County Human Trafficking Taskforce recently made its first arrest. Damon Napier, 61, was charged with trafficking two women in Oakland and Macomb Counties. Sheriff Mike Bouchard stressed the importance of a community-wide effort in combating trafficking.

What to Watch For:
Signs of trafficking include:

  • Cowering or submissive behavior.
  • Lack of freedom to move independently.
  • Absence of personal identification.

If you notice these signs, officials urge you to report them immediately to local authorities.

This initiative aims to expose the hidden epidemic and ensure victims receive the support and justice they deserve.
