Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has given her approval to a range of bills that provide homeowners with greater flexibility when it comes to their properties. These bills include the permission to have accessory dwelling units (casitas) and backyard chickens.
Governor Hobbs recently signed HB 2720 into law, which requires cities with populations over 75,000 to allow accessory dwelling units on properties zoned for single-family homes. Although the bill received support from both sides of the Legislature, cities expressed concerns about the possible rise in short-term rentals as a result of the casitas expansion.
This legislation was part of a larger initiative, which also includes HB 2721, aimed at adjusting zoning regulations in specific cities to promote a wider range of housing choices. Governor Hobbs stressed the significance of working together across party lines to pass these bills aimed at tackling housing affordability challenges in Arizona.
In addition, Governor Hobbs has signed HB 2325, which prevents cities from banning backyard chickens in single-family homes. This move seeks to empower homeowners to keep chickens for personal use without being hindered by local ordinances.
Governor Hobbs has signed several bills into law, including ones that address the rights of political candidates in dealing with AI-generated “deepfakes” and provide individuals convicted of prostitution the opportunity to vacate their charges if they are victims of sex trafficking.
These legislative actions demonstrate a focused effort to broaden housing options, safeguard individual rights, and tackle emerging challenges in Arizona’s legal landscape.
