Great news for SNAP participants and New York farmers! New York State is now accepting applications for the FreshConnect CSA for SNAP program. This innovative initiative aims to connect people using SNAP benefits with fresh, locally grown produce while supporting local farmers.
Announced by Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball, the program is designed to make Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares more affordable for SNAP users. This effort aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul’s commitment to promote New York’s agricultural products and improve access to fresh food for all New Yorkers.
Commissioner Ball highlighted the program’s dual benefit: “Our goal is to ensure underserved communities have access to nutritious, locally grown foods while supporting the farmers who produce them. The FreshConnect CSA for SNAP program is a fantastic way to bring these benefits together.”
How the Program Works
Eligible organizations, such as not-for-profits, educational institutions, tribal groups, and local governments, can apply for funding to help reduce the cost of weekly CSA shares for SNAP recipients. This means SNAP users can enjoy a bounty of fresh produce at a lower cost, while farmers receive the full value of their produce.
Program Objectives:
- Support Local Farmers: By increasing access to CSA shares, the program helps farmers reach more customers across New York.
- Provide Fresh Food: SNAP participants get weekly shares of fresh, nutritious produce, enhancing their access to healthy food.
- Build Community Awareness: The program aims to strengthen community bonds and highlight the variety of New York-grown produce.
Application Details
The program has a total of $250,000 available in funding. Organizations can apply for up to $50,000 to support their projects. Applications will be accepted until the funds are exhausted or by the final deadline of 3:00 pm on August 27, 2024.
To help potential applicants understand the program, an informational webinar will be held on Tuesday, June 18. This session will cover everything you need to know about applying and participating.
