After the University of Texas at Austin’s commencement ceremony, a small group of individuals gathered at the Lyndon B. Johnson Lawn to express their opposition towards Israel. In disregard of President Jay Hartzell’s request for a calm and tranquil event, the demonstration proceeded with the presence of Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.
Reports indicated that the presence of demonstrators was evident, although it was challenging to determine the exact number. Hartzell had highlighted the university’s dedication to backing lawful protests while also emphasising the importance of ensuring the safety of attendees.
Despite the anticipation of possible protests, many students were taken aback by the absence of demonstrations leading up to the commencement.
Julian Alin, a graduate from UT, highlighted the importance of coming together to celebrate such a significant milestone, regardless of any political differences. The demonstration concluded smoothly and peacefully, coming to an end shortly after 10 p.m. local time.
