A gunman who began shooting inside an Amazon warehouse facility in West Jefferson was ultimately killed by Columbus police after the man shot one officer on Sunday evening on the West Side.

Thankfully, the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and did not suffer any significant injuries, as reported by police union leaders. This incident represents another tragic shooting involving a Columbus officer, occurring within a day of another officer being fatally shot in Euclid, a suburb near Cleveland, the previous night.

There were no reported injuries at the Amazon facility, and Amazon has confirmed that the individual involved was not an employee but a contractor who had been assigned to the distribution centre by a third-party partner.

At approximately 4:45 p.m., a single shot resulted in damage to a building at the warehouse, as reported by the West Jefferson police.

Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, provided an explanation that officers from Madison County tracked the suspect’s car to Columbus. Upon reaching Columbus, officers made an attempt to stop the vehicle. The suspect opened fire on officers, leading them to respond with gunfire.

A shooting incident took place around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of Georgesville and Clime roads, just east of the I-270 outerbelt.

The officer’s life was likely saved by his bulletproof vest, and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a few hours. The incident started when the suspect allegedly discharged shots inside the Amazon warehouse.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently investigating both shootings involving Columbus police. Following the investigation, the Franklin County Prosecutor’s office will review the cases before presenting them to a grand jury, in accordance with department policy.

During a separate incident, Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, a suspect in the fatal shooting of Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin, passed away on Sunday evening during a standoff with SWAT units in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Derbin tragically lost his life while bravely responding to a disturbance on Saturday night, which the police have described as an unexpected and violent attack.
