Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced on Tuesday that he will not run for governor in 2026, effectively taking himself out of consideration for the state’s highest office.

Marshall, who has served as attorney general since 2017, made the decision after discussing it with his wife, Tammy, during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Despite his decision not to seek the governorship, Marshall emphasized that he is not stepping away from politics or public service, stating he plans to complete his current term as attorney general and continue his work.

Governor Kay Ivey, who has held the office since 2017, is in her final term, which is expected to lead to a crowded field of candidates in the 2026 race for governor.

Marshall’s name had previously been floated as a potential candidate. While Marshall confirmed he has had discussions with the incoming Trump administration about future opportunities, he remains committed to his role as attorney general.

Marshall is also known for his legal actions against policies of the Biden administration, as well as his involvement in Alabama’s adoption of nitrogen gas as a method of execution, making the state the first to implement it in 2024.
