(Thechieftainspear) – A tragic incident in Norco on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a 78-year-old man from Corona after an attempted vehicle theft escalated into a fatal dragging, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The deadly carjacking occurred around 12:30 p.m. at a gas station on Hidden Valley Parkway. Officials say the elderly man was cleaning his Chevrolet Trailblazer with the doors open at the facility’s car wash area when an individual suddenly entered the SUV and tried to steal it.
As the suspect began reversing the vehicle, the victim—who was partially inside the back seat—became caught and was dragged along the roadway. Eventually, he was thrown from the vehicle.
Emergency responders rushed the severely injured man to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name has not yet been made public, pending family notification.

Authorities say multiple locations are now part of the investigation, including the gas station itself, a section of Hidden Valley Parkway, and an area in Riverside near the intersection of Polk Street and Magnolia Avenue.
One person has been detained in connection to the incident, and several others are being interviewed. Detectives are combing through surveillance footage to identify the primary suspect. At this time, no additional suspect descriptions have been released, but officials stressed that there is no known ongoing danger to the community.
The Sheriff’s Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crime or captured it on video to contact investigators as the probe continues .
