Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra raised concerns at a recent fundraiser, suggesting that Democrats might steal some votes if the U.S. Senate race between former Rep. Mike Rogers R-Mich. and Rep. Elissa Slotkin D-Mich. gets close.
Hoekstra, speaking in Farmington Hills, praised Rogers’ track record of winning close races but expressed fears about potential Democratic interference in a tight race.
Hoekstra’s remarks, captured in a recording obtained by The Hill and first reported by The Detroit News, have sparked backlash from Michigan Democrats, with Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes condemning the comments as undermining democracy.
Slotkin also criticized the statements, linking them to dangerous rhetoric that contributed to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
This comes amid heightened sensitivity to election integrity issues in Michigan, following former President Trump’s baseless claims of a rigged 2020 election.
Slotkin currently holds a 6-point lead over Rogers in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow, according to a recent poll.
Both the Michigan GOP and Rogers’s campaign have not yet commented on Hoekstra’s remarks.
