Dear Blue and Gold Gazette,
I have bad anxiety. What are some helpful tips and articles on how to control my anxiety?
Dealing with anxiety can make even minor setbacks or challenges in life harder to overcome. However, you have the upper hand, because you can “out-think” your anxiety. In the end, it is a mind game. If you stress about something before it happens, you are putting yourself through it twice. Whenever you feel a negative thought rising, counter it with a positive thought. Instead of letting your mind discourage you, use it to lift you up. Let go of the “what if’s” and let whatever happens happen. Live in the moment.
Be aware of your stressors. Have you recently started taking medication? Is it large crowds? Changes in diet, routine, or relationships?
When you feel yourself getting anxious, stop what you are doing and become aware of your body. Pay attention to your physical body. Does your heart rate increase? Does your breathing become shorter? Does your mind go blank? Become aware of your body and take a very deep breath. When you breathe out, imagine your muscles loosening one at a time. Start with your legs then work your way up or vise versa.
Consider doing meditation. There are apps you can download on your phone, or you can join the yoga class offered at the school.
Start journaling about what makes you anxious and how you responded to it.
