This year, rivers in Stanislaus County have claimed several lives. On Tuesday, a 26-year-old man became the 8th person to drown in the area.

The victim, Marcos Garcia of Salida, was with family and friends at the river when he jumped in at around 7:45 p.m. to help someone struggling to swim. Others also jumped in to assist, but Garcia did not make it back to shore.

By 8:15 p.m., the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office air unit located Garcia and directed ground units to his location. A deputy jumped in, recovered Garcia, and started life-saving measures, but Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident follows a recent video release by the sheriff’s office featuring 911 calls from family and friends of a drowning victim, including a tearful child searching for his father. The sheriff’s office used the video to highlight the importance of wearing life jackets.

None of the drowning victims, including Garcia, were wearing life jackets. The incident is under investigation.
