A 2-year-old girl has died after being left in a hot car by her father in Arizona, where temperatures have been extremely high.

The father had been running errands with his daughter and returned home on Tuesday afternoon. He left the car running with the air conditioning on, but when he returned to the car 30 to 60 minutes later, it had turned off.

The girl was unresponsive, and the father called 911. She was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

The temperature in Marana, a town near Tucson, reached 111 degrees on Tuesday. The police are investigating, and no charges have been filed yet, although they have not been ruled out.

So far this year, at least nine children in the U.S. have died from being left in hot cars, according to KidsAndCars.org. Since 1990, at least 1,093 children have died this way, with about 88% of them being 3 years old or younger.
