A US judge dismissed a $10 billion lawsuit from the Mexican government against six American gun manufacturers on Wednesday. The lawsuit aimed to hold these companies responsible for deaths caused by guns trafficked into Mexico.

Judge Dennis Saylor ruled that the court in Massachusetts did not have enough jurisdiction over the gun manufacturers. He found that their connections to the state were minimal.

Judge Saylor’s ruling stated that the links between the case and Massachusetts were very weak.

In Mexico, buying guns legally is almost impossible due to strict regulations. However, drug-related violence is common, with over half a million guns trafficked into Mexico from the US each year.

The Mexican government has recently filed similar lawsuits in Massachusetts and Arizona against US gun manufacturers and dealers.

Wednesday’s ruling dismissed the case against Beretta USA, Colt, Glock, Barrett, Century International, and Sturm, Ruger and Company in Massachusetts.

Judge Saylor determined that there was not enough evidence linking these companies to Massachusetts or proving a direct connection between their business practices and the injuries claimed by Mexico.

In Arizona, a separate lawsuit targets five dealers for selling guns used in serious crimes in Mexico.
